The Graduate School Admissions Process: An Overview
Now that you've selected the right graduate school and program, the next step is getting in. Applying to grad school doesn't have to be frustrating or difficult. The more you know about the process before applying, the better your chances will be of getting accepted. Here are the basic steps:

  • Research your program. Graduate schools choose candidates who can prove that they are well-equipped to succeed in their chosen field. Learn as much as you can about the program before submitting application materials.
  • Master the test. No matter what exam your program requires you to take, there are dozens of resources that can help you maximize your score. Take advantage of study groups, online prep tools, and expert advice whenever possible.
  • Request and complete the application. Almost every grad school's application consists of the same components: transcripts, standardized test scores, admissions essay(s), letter(s) of recommendation. Make sure that you read each section of the application carefully, paying special attention to deadlines and associated fees.
  • Market yourself. The admissions essay, letters of recommendation, and entrance interview are all opportunities to showcase your strengths. Spend extra time editing your essay and redrafting it if necessary. Choose trusted colleagues and teachers to write your letters of recommendation, making sure that they know your abilities well enough and have ample time to write a thorough recommendation. Practice for the interview by speaking with clarity and confidence—remember that they are being interviewed as well.

These are the basics of navigating graduate admissions. Deadlines, fees, degree requirements, and procedures usually vary from program to program, so be sure to keep in regular contact with representatives from your school of choice to stay in the loop and on track.
