Dual degrees can mean higher salaries

Posted on 3/11/2010
Yes, it's an extra year or two of school. Yes, it's more coursework. Yes, it's tough. But what's tough can be worth it in the end, as students who complete a JD MBA program can find themselves with more career opportunities and better pay.

Veritas Prep, a test preparation company, reports that graduates of JD MBA programs can make as much as $15,000-$30,000 more per year after they complete their studies. Some law firms pay JD MBAs at a second-year associate level during their first year on the job.

And in a tough economy, the more versatility you have, the better. A JD MBA program can offer a flexibility that neither degree can provide alone. That can help students get and keep a better job.

These types of programs "will be a training ground for the future leaders of [the nation]," Melissa Essary, dean of the law school at Campbell University, told WRAL.

In fact, Campbell and North Carolina State University have recently joined forces to provide a dual degree program this fall, integrating a law degree from Campbell and a master's in public administration from NC State.

PayScale.com, a research company, reports that average salaries for holders of MBA degrees ranged from $73,510 to $171,583 in 2008, depending on the field, position and years of experience.ADNFCR-2969-ID-19664179-ADNFCR
