Engineering graduate schools take recent disasters to heart
Posted on 6/21/2010
Events such as the BP oil spill have prompted the creation of new engineering careers that focus on the prevention of accidents. As a result, some schools are creating engineering masters programs that can prepare students for these emerging positions.
For instance, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) recently created an online masters program in advanced safety engineering and management, The Birmingham News reports.
The program, which is slated to begin this fall, is designed to cater to working professionals who hold jobs in safety-related industries. Although enrollees do not need to have a bachelors degree in engineering, they should have some industrial experience.
Jennifer Bailey, a safety officer who will be teaching part of the program, told the media outlet that this course of study is intended to address the need to be designing our workplaces, our homes and all our infrastructure with that important fact in mind: people are going to make mistakes.
UAB is one of many schools that are developing similar programs to answer the demand for engineers who have the skills to prevent problems such as on-the-job injuries and environmental disasters.
These courses of study could lead graduates into lucrative careers, as government analysts say that nearly 200,000 new engineering jobs will created over the next decade.
