Government increases funding for graduate nursing programs

Posted on 8/8/2010
Due to the growing aging population and the proliferation of terminal illnesses, the demand for highly skilled nursing professionals is expected to increase. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that more than 580,000 entry-level and graduate nursing jobs will be created over the next eight years.

Nurses who have specialized training from a masters program are expected to have especially favorable job prospects, according to the BLS. As a result, individuals who wish to become clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives or nurse anesthetists may want to consider enrolling in a graduate nursing program.

In the recent months, the government has recognized the need for skilled nurses by disbursing funds to schools that offer or are planning to create masters degrees in the field.

For instance, The University of Colorado College of Nursing recently received more than $700,000 from the Department of Health and Human Services, the Aurora Sentinel reports. This financial aid package will be used to create a masters program that is intended to serve nurses who work in rural or underserved urban areas in the state.

The 30-credit program will include classes on subjects such as nursing leadership and healthcare systems, according to the news source.ADNFCR-2969-ID-19922706-ADNFCR
