Graduate public health programs could lead students into emerging fields

Posted on 8/26/2010
Healthcare professionals who are interested in exploring a new sector in their industry may want to consider enrolling in graduate programs in health that can lead them into up-and-coming fields, such as agricultural biosecurity.

These courses of study could lead students into profitable careers, as recent events - such as the release of salmonella-infected eggs - have placed a renewed emphasis on the need for food protection.

Individuals who wish to enter this emerging industry will need a base knowledge of food, animal and food security threats, microbial forensics, infectious disease surveillance systems and related technologies, disease prediction models as well as protection and mitigation methods.

Prospective agricultural biosecurity professionals may be able to learn these techniques in master's programs, such as the one that is available through Penn State University. In fact, a graduate program may be ideal for these individuals, as the field is growing increasingly complex.

"There are all kinds of threats to agriculture that occur naturally or by the actions of people that cause illnesses or damage crops," said Gretchen Kuldau, a professor of plant pathology at the school. ADNFCR-2969-ID-19931934-ADNFCR
