Graduate public health programs integrate business teachings

Healthcare reform has complicated the professional responsibilities of many managers in the field. As a result, some graduate programs in health are equipping students with the skills they will need to succeed in an ever-changing and fast-growing industry.
For example, Washington University in St. Louis recently announced the launch of an interdisciplinary master's program that will enable prospective healthcare managers to gain business skills in addition to expertise in their field.
Through a collaboration between the college's Olin Business School and Brown School, students will now be able to earn both MBA and master's of public health (MPH) degrees in one program. Enrollees will be required to complete 87 course hours and are expected to earn a degree in as little as two and a half years.
School officials say that the curriculum will focus on business, economics and policy, and enable health managers to succeed as their industry faces significant changes.
Graduates of similar programs could see promising career prospects in the future, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects that more than 45,000 new positions for health and medical services managers will be created over the next eight years.
