Online courses to receive endorsement from World Education Council

Posted on 2/5/2010
As the popularity of online education continues to grow - more than 4 million students in the U.S. are enrolled in online programs from associates to masters to online doctorate degrees - the sector is set to receive further endorsement from experts at the World Education Council (WEC).

The organization, which is dedicated to facilitating access to education, has announced it now certifies courses that meet specific criteria for quality and value to students. Its representatives specified that the aim is to support education as a way toward better health and well-being, productivity and sustainability.

The WEC Seal of Excellence will be given to online courses, including distance learning graduate degrees, that pass independent evaluations based on transparent standards that meet the above criteria.

Laura Lewis, the organization's president, said that "online [instruction] is a rapidly growing field, and it can be a powerful tool for spreading the benefits of education."

The sector grew by 17 percent in 2008 and had been expanding at about 20 percent in previous years. Nearly one in four American students take at least some college courses online, up from one in 10 in 2002, Reuters reports.
