Online programs in computer science can pay dividends

In this age of heavy reliance on computers and the internet, computer technicians and engineers are always in high demand. Some colleges are taking advantage of students' interest in these fields by offering new types of online masters degrees in computer science.

Schools have been offering online masters degrees in these cutting edge technologies for years, but the importance of such programs has grown with the advent of credit card identity theft and other online security concerns. Some online programs are geared specifically to fields like computer systems security and database systems.

In fact, computer science programs have seen a recent resurgence in popularity, according to the New York Times. From 2007 to 2009, enrollment in this field of study increased 6.2 percent, according to a study published by the Computing Research Association.

Peter Harsha, director of government affairs at the CRA, said that "interest in computer science appears to have turned the corner," quoted by the news source. Harsha said the skill sets learned through these type of programs can be invaluable across several industries.

Computer science and engineering professionals stand to make almost $56,000 a year on average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.ADNFCR-2969-ID-19664974-ADNFCR
