Peace Corps partners with university to create new master’s degree program

Posted on 10/1/2010
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), those who wish to work in the education sector of the federal government may find jobs in the Peace Corps, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Communications Commission. These professionals typically monitor and distribute financial aid to schools and students, collect and disseminate data on schools and other education matters and prohibit discrimination in education.

In order to help students who wish to be employed by the government, West Virginia University (WVU) is collaborating with the Peace Corps to offer a new master's degree program, the Charleston Daily Mail reports. The Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design will participate in a program that lets graduate students pursue a master's of science while completing an international service internship.

Associate provost Jonathan Cumming told the news source that it builds on WVU's commitment to providing unique service learning opportunities.

Peace Corps coordinator Todd Petty told the media outlet that students can apply what they've learned at WVU and see immediate benefits as they help communities develop sustainable solutions for their problems.

The BLS reports that employment of federal workers is expected to increase by 10 percent over the next eight years.
