School offers master’s degree in cybersecurity

Posted on 9/28/2010
As the military continues to adopt advanced technology, the need for professionals trained in cybersecurity increases. Also, businesses are becoming more dependent on computers, which are vulnerable to hackers.

In order to prepare more individuals for a career in this field, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) recently launched an online master's degree in cybersecurity and a graduate certificate in cybersecurity strategy and policy, The Retriever Weekly reports. Both programs are aimed at students who already hold an information technology degree as well as working professionals who wish to enter the field.

"The master's program is more technical, but [it] is not just for people who are especially skilled with computers," Richard Forno, director of the graduate program, told the news source. "Technology permeates everything. We need to have people who can deal with threats and also recognize new ones."

The master's degree curriculum focuses on law, policy and management, as well as technological skills. The majority of the classes will be lectures, but online and hybrid courses will be available as well.

Median wages for technology professionals in management positions were $112,210 during the 2008 fiscal year.
