Today’s MBA careers require technical, public service skills

Posted on 5/14/2010
In an effort to produce highly qualified graduates, many business schools are tailoring their offerings to emerging trends in the industry. As a result, many of these institutions are creating new courses of study, such as socially responsible or green MBA programs.

For example, Stanford University's Graduate School of Business recently began offering a class that teaches degree candidates to use social media to promote their companies' public service initiatives, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Students who enroll in similar courses will learn how to use platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to boost their visibility and advertise their socially responsible efforts. As a result, they may develop the technical and marketing skills that could make them valuable assets to their current and prospective employers.

Individuals who wish to improve their employer's image after graduating from an MBA program may choose to become public relations managers.

The demand for these professionals is expected to increase by 13 percent over the next eight years, according the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
