University offers master’s degree in emergent media

Posted on 10/5/2010
As a result of today's trends in technology, such as internet, mobile and broadcast networks, there is a high demand for trained professionals in science and computer-related fields. In order to prepare more adults for jobs in these industries, a growing number of schools are offering advanced degrees on related topics.

For example, Champlain College recently announced that it is offering a master's of fine arts (MFA) degree in emergent media. The program was designed to offer graduate students real-world experience designing video games and building virtual environments, as well as using stop-motion graphic animation tools as part of their work for clients such as IBM, CIMIT, the City of Burlington and the United Nations.

"If you possess a creative mind and collaborative spirit we'll help you develop technical skills while immersing you in the business, cultural, and aesthetic contexts of those skills," said program director Ann DeMarle. "This is your opportunity to determine the direction emergent media will take and the places it will take you and the world."

The curriculum includes lectures and seminars that focus on digital image-making as well as individual and group community projects.
