The National Education Association (NEA), which is is the nation's largest organization of educators, recently partnered with UMassOnline, Western Governors University and Walden University to provide master's degrees in education to NEA members.

"Our mission is to create programs that make the personal and professional lives of members better," said Lily Eskelsen, vice president of the NEA. "This includes providing convenient access to the lifelong learning opportunities we know educators seek out. These partnerships and this program reflect the NEA's commitment to helping educators master their craft."

The NEA represents 3.2 million elementary and secondary teachers, higher education faculty, education support professionals, school administrators, retired educators and students who are preparing to become teachers.

Schools such as Oklahoma University cater to service members by flying professors to military bases, The Oklahoma Daily reports. Of the university's 6,000 graduate students, approximately 1,750 are pursuing master's degrees on base.

Professors from the school's Norman campus are flown to military bases across the country as frequently as six times per year. The teachers are present on base for about 30 contact hours, the news source reports.

"There are some new faces on base every once in a while, but for the most part, there has been a group of particular professors who have been going over," Tim Davidson, associate professor of human relations, told the media outlet.

For example, Grand Rapids Theological Seminary (GRTS) of Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan is now offering two online master's degrees in ministry leadership and biblical studies, the Morning Star Publishing Company reports.

The master's degree in ministry leadership is designed for those who are in ministry leadership positions and want to grow personally, spiritually and professionally, while the degree in biblical studies was created for students who want advanced theological study.

"GRTS ministry students complete a four-semester ministry residency which provides 'hands on' ministry experience for our students," said Graham McKeague, director of admissions for GRTS. "It has been a great way for students to apply their classroom learning to real-life ministry experience and allows them to be more fully prepared and equipped for ministry upon graduation."

Ashford University recently announced that Quality Matters has recognized 93 of its courses. These classes are part of several Ashford University bachelor's and master's degree programs, including early childhood education, homeland security management and healthcare administration.

"Quality Matters has provided an industry-wide standard designed to certify the quality of online courses," said Elizabeth Tice, of the school's provost. "While excellence is of utmost importance to us internally, independent third-party validation is an endorsement of our commitment to quality and adds reassurance to our faculty and students.

According to the program, for a course to be recognized, "it must have met a set of 40 specific elements, distributed across eight broad standards." These criteria include course overview and introduction, learning objectives, assessment and measurement, resources and materials, learner engagement, course technology, learner support and accessibility.

The reading literacy program focuses on building additional expertise and understanding of the necessary skills for instruction in reading and writing. The curriculum was designed with the International Reading Association Standards for Reading Professionals in mind.

"The reading literacy specialization provides a fresh approach to advanced knowledge and skills in reading and writing instruction to support struggling readers," said Joen Rottler, dean of Ashford's College of Education.

The library and media degree was created to help students build awareness and understanding of the work of school librarians and media specialists. In addition to the core coursework for the master's program, students will complete 12 credits related to library and media services.
