Profile

Grambling State University, a constituent member of the University of Louisiana System, is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Its instructional programs are delivered through four colleges (Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Professional Studies) and the School of Graduate Studies and Research. The university offers the only doctorate in developmental education in the nation.

Grambling State University, founded in 1901, emerged from the desire of African American farmers in rural north Louisiana who wanted to educate black children in the northern and western parts of the state. The 375-acre campus is nestled in the heart of Grambling, Louisiana, a small but growing community located in Lincoln Parish. The university is five miles west of Ruston, a small city of 25,000, and is within easy driving distance of the large cities of Shreveport and Monroe. Grambling State University combines all the strengths of a major university with the personality of a small college, thereby allowing students to grow and learn in a positive environment.

Regular Admission

For regular admission to the School of Graduate Studies and Research, an applicant must:

  • Have a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an institution that is accredited by an appropriate regional or national accrediting agency.
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale) or better on all undergraduate work and a 3.0 on all graduate hours pursued.
  • Submit official scores for Graduate Record Examination. Candidates for the MPA Program may submit scores from the GRE or GMAT. Scores must be no more than five years prior to the date of admission.
  • Have three letters of recommendation on official letterhead sent directly to the School of Graduate Studies and Research from individuals who can attest to the applicant’s academic ability, written and oral communication skills, personal and professional ethics, and interpersonal skills.

Student Life

The Division of Student Affairs promotes quality student life through an array of student-focused programs and activities. A wide variety of student clubs and organizations at Grambling ensures that every student will find an activity of interest.

One of the most popular campus organizations is the Tiger Marching Band, touted as the number-one collegiate show band in the world. Intercollegiate athletics has also made Grambling State University a household name among national universities. The University offers a wide range of intermural and intramural sports.
