Education
The Brooklyn College School of Education, one of the largest teacher training programs in NYC, has been rated by the Petersons Guide as one of the top 22 education programs in the entire country. Through collaborative efforts, teaching, and research, the School of Education develops a student’s capacity to create socially just, intellectually vital, aesthetically rich, and compassionate communities that value equity and excellence, access, and rigor. The programs are designed in cooperation with liberal arts and sciences faculties and in consultation with local schools in order to provide students with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, proficiencies, and understandings needed to work with New York City’s racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse population.
The faculty believes that teaching is an art that incorporates critical self-reflection and openness to new ideas, practices, and technologies and that it focuses on the individual learner’s needs and promotes growth. The school’s collective work is shaped by scholarship and is animated by a commitment to educate students to the highest standards of professional competence.
Members of the School of Education faculty are leaders in education, garnering awards for their scholarship and role in shaping school programs. Actively pursuing research and the formation of real change in the city’s schools, faculty members have received grants from the U.S. and New York State Departments of Education and the National Science Foundation, among others.
The Master of Science in Education (MSEd) is offered in:
- early childhood education (birth–grade 2)
- childhood education (grades 1–6), with a focus in liberal arts, bilingual education, mathematics, or science and environmental education, and an extension in gifted education
- middle childhood education (grades 5–9), with a focus in mathematics or general science
- educational leadership
- school counseling
- school psychology
- teaching of students with disabilities in early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescent education
Degree programs have options to meet the needs of students who have varying levels of professional experience. Advanced certificates are offered in autism spectrum disorders, school counseling, and school psychology.
The graduate-level teacher education programs lead to initial and/or professional certification. In collaboration with the New York City Department of Education, students may obtain internship certificates that permit them to teach for up to two years while completing their degree work.
