Mental Health Counseling
The Department of Psychology at Brooklyn College is known worldwide for its highly regarded faculty members and their research. Through close working relationships with faculty, and becoming actively engaged in their research, students gain deep insight into what makes us human, how we experience information and emotions, and how this knowledge can help individuals, groups, and society at large. Study includes thorough exploration of theory and content, critical-thinking skills and research, applications and values of the discipline, information and technological literacy, socio-cultural and international awareness, and personal development.
Applicants to the program must offer a minimum of 12 credits in psychology or evidence of appropriate background in related fields.
The Master of Arts in mental health counseling combines experiential learning with counseling practicum experience in mental health settings, along with comprehensive course work. Study explores three major streams of counseling and psychotherapeutic practice: cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and experiential/humanistic counseling. Sixty credits are required for the degree, a minimum of 48 of which must be taken within the department. Students must also pass a comprehensive exam. Three thousand hours of supervised post-degree experience are required to be eligible to take the examination for licensure permitting private practice of mental health counseling.
The Master of Arts is also offered in experimental psychology as well as industrial and organizational psychology (human relations or organizational psychology and behavior).
Graduates of the program are well prepared for a practice in mental health counseling—focus primarily on clinical work with adults and families. They also pursue practices in human development, psychopathology, counseling theory, and professional foundations.
The City University doctoral program in experimental psychology is based at Brooklyn College. Many courses offered at Brooklyn College may be credited toward the CUNY doctoral degree. Candidates who complete the MA may apply for admission to the doctoral program.
