Why did you choose your program?
I chose this program because the College of Mount Saint Joseph has an excellent reputation in the physical therapy field. I was also interested in this program because it was very close to home. I wanted to stay close to my friends and family during my graduate school career. I believe it is very important to have a great support system during this time.
What did you earn your undergraduate degree in?
I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences in 2006 from the University of Cincinnati.
How does graduate school differ from undergrad?
Graduate school requires a higher level of critical thinking, determination and dedication. There is more work involved and there are higher expectations in graduate school. Grad school is very time consuming and requires a lot of sacrifice. It is also important to have great time management skills.
What has been the course work been like in your program?
The course work mainly focuses on science. We take classes involving human anatomy, biomechanics, kinesiology, pathology and pharmacology, neurology, geriatrics, and many more subjects over the course of three years. Physical therapists examine, evaluate, diagnose, and treat individuals with movement disorders, focusing on the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. We also have four full-time clinical rotations in which we work as a student physical therapist under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation in May of 2009, I plan on working as a licensed physical therapist, most likely in the outpatient orthopedic setting in Cincinnati.
Do you have any advice for students considering a graduate program?
I would advise them to search for scholarships before beginning their graduate program. Make sure you have a great support system. Be ready to dedicate a large portion of your time to studying and course work. Graduate school requires a lot of hard work and sacrifice, and it can be very stressful at times, but in the end it is worth it.
