Preparing Education Professionals for the Challenges of the Urban Teaching and Learning Environment
Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus School of Education is located in Downtown Brooklyn. Its programs have an urban focus that prepares teachers, counselors, administrators, and school psychologists for the challenges and the adventure of urban education. Many of the future and practicing educators who attend and graduate from our programs are themselves urban dwellers and immigrants who represent a wide variety of ethno-linguistic and racial groups. They bring to their studies and to their research the experiential knowledge of diverse urban communities that is essential to educate the children and families in these communities.
KEEPS—A Mission of Excellence and Empathy
The School of Education’s KEEPS mission serves to address one of the most important questions in urban education today: How can urban educators be expertly prepared to meet rising educational standards, while always taking into consideration what is most beneficial for their students?
KNOWLEDGE and intellectual inquisitiveness about children, schools, and
the world.
ENQUIRY or the collective discipline of observation, reflection, and
non-judgmental description of children and their schoolwork, as well as
descriptive inquiry of teaching and professional practice.
EMPATHY that rests on the human uniqueness and the capacity to develop,
as well as responsiveness to the needs and interests of urban learners and
communities.
PLURALISM and attention to differences, as well as to the inclusion of
all in the learning community of schools and the wider community.
SOCIAL COMMITMENT to the building of a just and democratic society.
Offering Expertise in a Variety of Career Specializations
The School of Education is composed of two departments that offer a broad number of degree programs that lead to New York State Certification.
The Department of Teaching and Learning (TAL), prepares educators for teaching in diverse urban classrooms at all levels. The Department of Human Development and Leadership (HDL) prepares counselors, school psychologists, and administrators. A full list of graduate programs offered by these departments is available on the School of Education Web site.
Providing a Wealth of Top-Notch Educational Resources
In addition to a comprehensive curriculum, students in our graduate programs benefit from the school’s Learning Center for Educators and Families (LCEF), which links the learning of prospective and practicing educators to that of children and their families. It brings together theory, practice, and research by providing educational services to families in the community, while serving as a practicum and research site for students and faculty members from the School of Education. The School of Education’s Center for Urban Educators (CUE) supports the reform of urban teacher education, linking efforts at the university level with those at the K-12 level.
