What makes the ILR School unique?

The ILR School at Cornell is the premier institution for the study of employment-related issues and is known for producing leaders who improve organizations and people’s lives, advancing the world of work through teaching, research, and outreach. It is the only institution of higher education in the United States to offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in the interdisciplinary field of workplace studies. Cornell ILR graduate students are consistently in demand, working in business, high-tech, financial services, manufacturing, and not-for-profit sectors in every region of the United States and around the world.

How do ILR Advanced Degrees prepare you to lead tomorrow’s workforce?

At ILR, we are preparing you for the future right now. Our five advanced degrees provide a broad-based foundation with a specific, intense focus on the interaction between people and organizations in the workplace, and are unlike any other program in the world.

  • The Master of Industrial and Labor Relations (MILR) is a professional, career-focused degree for those interested in putting their education into practice in a workplace setting. The MILR is the top degree program in the area of human resources and labor relations.
  • The MILR/MBA, a powerful dual-degree offered jointly by the ILR School and the Johnson School Graduate School of Management at Cornell, offers a unique opportunity for students to gain a competitive edge in today's fast changing, increasingly complex workplace.
  • The MS and PhD degrees are excellent for students considering an academic or research career in human resources or labor relations.
  • The Master of Professional Studies (MPS) program is designed for individuals who are already practitioners and want to expand or advance into a specific competency or upgrade their skills and understanding.
  • The MILR/Master in Management, a three-year, dual-degree program, allows students an opportunity for an international experience that will advance their career goals and increase their marketability worldwide.

What does ILR look for in a prospective student?

Admission to the ILR School is competitive, but each application is considered individually. Successful applicants have undergraduate (and graduate) degrees from a variety of majors. While not a requirement, the majority of applicants for the professional master's programs have a few years’ work experience. The Cornell tradition of graduate education recognizes that each student has different needs, strengths, and goals, and the university makes every effort to accommodate students’ specific requirements.
