Become a Teacher in a Year with a Master of Arts in Teaching

Prepare to change lives. FSU’s 12-month (May to May) Master of Arts in Teaching program is a full-time, intensive program that provides you with academic instruction combined with experience working directly with students in real-world classrooms. It’s the perfect program for those who want to change careers and touch the future as a teacher. Are you ready to make a change?

Two Options: Elementary and Secondary

  • The MAT Elementary program is designed for those who have a bachelor’s degree in any field and courses in various content areas. Hosted at the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown.
  • The MAT Secondary program is designed for those who have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent coursework in math, science, art, social science, English, or foreign language or equivalent coursework and want to teach middle or high school. Hosted in Frostburg and USM-Hagerstown.

The MAT Experience

  • NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) accredited.
  • One-year, intensive program, beginning each May.
  • Financial aid packages are designed for career-changers.
  • Includes 100 days of field experience in real classrooms.
  • FSU has relationships with Professional Development Schools for field placements in Allegany, Frederick, Garrett, and Washington counties in Maryland; Mineral County in West Virginia; and Meyersdale Area Schools (Somerset County) in Pennsylvania.
  • Competitive tuition rates.
  • You will complete your year’s study with the same cohort, a core group of fellow students.
  • Application deadline is April 1.
  • MAT Elementary hosted in Hagerstown.
  • MAT Secondary hosted in Frostburg and Hagerstown.
