Bethel University: Because diversity brings students of all capabilities and backgrounds into the typical classroom, pre-service teachers need to learn strategies for working with special education and English language learners (ELL). The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, responding to the high demands new teachers face, has created an innovative new course: Intensive Training for Integrating Special Education and English Language Learners. 'Even if you are going to teach the smartest kids, you still have to understand Asperger's, those with social skill problems, ELL students, or those with visual or hearing impairments, * Judi Landrum, MAT program director, explained. The course breaks new ground not only because of the combined topic but also because it occurs between the two required student teacher placements. This way, 'theories became more relevant, * Rob Ellis, MAT student, said. MAT learners attend the daytime class between student teaching placements.
