Terah - Hobsons GradView Scholarship Winner

Terah Crews is still deciding which school she will attend to complete a PhD in history, but given her remarkable scholastic record, one thing is for sure: She’ll have no trouble multitasking. Crews, an incoming first-year graduate student at the University of North Carolina (UNC), is the 2007 recipient of the Hobsons GradView Scholarship, a merit-based award that will help her to secure the ideal career—one, according to Crews, that allows her to “pass on the inspiration and mentorship I received at Carolina” and to “continue my research and writings on subjects such as Southern women in higher education, evolution of gender in the South, and sexual expression in American history.” No stranger to hard work and high expectations, Crews served during her undergrad studies at the UNC as board member and eventual seminar director of Triangle Community Works (TCW), a Raleigh-based non-profit community center. She also served as an on-campus outreach director for various student groups, steering committee member for Unity Conference, search committee member for student affairs staff positions, and co-founder of a community resource fair for the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area. Throughout those very busy and productive years, Crews built an invaluable professional network within the non-profit sector that led to a position as youth facilitator at A Safer Place Youth Network (ASPYN). Crews completed a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies and Psychology and is currently working with a fellow student to found UNC’s chapter of Iota Iota Iota, the women’s studies honor society that recognizes the accomplishments of students in that academic discipline. Crews’ top graduate school choices are Duke University, UNC, University of Pittsburgh, Rutgers/New Brunswick, and Brown.
